Description

These Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps offer a fresh, low-carb alternative to traditional tacos. Featuring seasoned ground turkey cooked with aromatic spices and simmered in tomato sauce, they are served in crisp lettuce leaves and topped with vibrant toppings like tomatoes, avocado, cheese, and cilantro. Perfect for a quick, high-protein, and flavorful meal that’s both satisfying and nutritious.

Ingredients

For the Turkey Filling

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • ½ small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ cup tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup water

For the Wraps

  • 8 large romaine or butter lettuce leaves
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, diced
  • ½ avocado, diced
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar or Mexican cheese
  • ¼ cup red onion, finely diced
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Lime wedges, for serving

Optional Toppings

  • Salsa
  • Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • Jalapeños
  • Guacamole
  • Corn
  • Black beans

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat to prepare for cooking the aromatics and turkey.
  2. Sauté Onion: Add the finely diced yellow onion to the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes until softened and translucent, enhancing the flavor base.
  3. Cook Turkey: Add the ground turkey, breaking it apart as it cooks, and cook for 5–7 minutes until browned and no longer pink inside.
  4. Add Spices and Garlic: Stir in minced garlic, chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the cooked turkey, mixing well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
  5. Simmer Sauce: Pour in the tomato sauce and water, then reduce heat slightly and let the mixture simmer for 3–4 minutes until it thickens slightly and the flavors meld.
  6. Prepare Lettuce: While the turkey simmers, wash and thoroughly dry the lettuce leaves, choosing either romaine for crunch or butter lettuce for softness.
  7. Assemble Wraps: Spoon the warm turkey mixture evenly into the prepared lettuce leaves, creating individual wraps.
  8. Add Toppings: Top each wrap with diced cherry tomatoes, avocado, shredded cheese, red onion, and chopped fresh cilantro for added flavor and texture.
  9. Serve: Serve immediately with lime wedges and optional toppings such as salsa, Greek yogurt, jalapeños, guacamole, corn, or black beans to suit your preference.

Notes

  • Butter lettuce is soft and flexible, making it easier to fold, while romaine offers a satisfying crunch.
  • Ground chicken or lean ground beef can be used as alternative proteins instead of turkey.
  • Add black beans or corn into the turkey mixture for a heartier filling.
  • For a dairy-free version, omit the cheese or substitute with dairy-free alternatives.
  • If prepping ahead, keep toppings separate until ready to assemble to maintain freshness and texture.
