Description

A classic, comforting pea and ham soup made effortlessly in the slow cooker. Thick, hearty, and full of smoky flavor, this soup is perfect for warming up on a chilly day and is packed with nutritious split peas and savory ham.

Ingredients

Soup Ingredients

  • 500 g dried split peas, rinsed
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 cups water or chicken stock
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Rinse the dried split peas thoroughly under cold water to remove impurities. Chop the onion, dice the carrots and celery, and mince the garlic cloves.
  2. Add to Slow Cooker: Place the rinsed split peas, smoked ham hock, chopped onion, diced carrots and celery, minced garlic, and 8 cups of water or chicken stock into the slow cooker bowl.
  3. Cook Soup: Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for 8 to 9 hours, or on high for 5 to 6 hours, allowing the flavors to meld and the peas to soften completely.
  4. Remove and Shred Ham: Once cooking is complete, carefully remove the ham hock from the soup. Shred the meat off the bone, discarding the bone and skin, then return the shredded ham meat to the soup.
  5. Season and Serve: Stir the soup well, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste, and serve hot for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • The soup thickens as it cools, so you may need to stir in a little water or stock when reheating.
