Description
A classic peach cobbler featuring sweet, juicy peaches beneath a golden buttery topping. This timeless Southern dessert is perfect served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, combining a tender fruit filling with a soft, cakey crust.
Ingredients
Filling
- 6 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
Topping
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 cup milk
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 175°C (350°F) to ensure it reaches the correct temperature for baking the cobbler evenly.
- Prepare the peach filling: In a bowl, combine the peeled and sliced peaches with granulated sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and cornstarch. Mix gently until all ingredients are well incorporated to create a sweet, slightly thickened fruit filling.
- Prepare the baking dish: Pour the melted unsalted butter into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish, making sure the butter evenly coats the surface to create a rich base for the batter.
- Mix the batter: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and milk until smooth, forming a light batter without lumps.
- Assemble the cobbler: Carefully pour the batter over the melted butter in the baking dish without stirring to let the butter rise through during baking. Then spoon the peach filling evenly over the batter, gently distributing it all across the top.
- Bake the cobbler: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and bubbly around the edges, indicating the cobbler is fully cooked.
- Cool and serve: Allow the cobbler to cool slightly before serving, which helps the juices thicken. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a classic touch.
Notes
- Fresh peaches provide the best flavor and texture, but canned peaches can be substituted if fresh are not available.
- Serving the cobbler warm with vanilla ice cream enhances the dessert’s richness and complements the sweetness of the peaches.
- Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator and consume within 3 to 4 days for best quality.
