Description
Norwegian Waffles are soft, tender, and lightly sweet waffles with a delicate cardamom flavor. Traditionally cooked in a heart-shaped waffle iron, these waffles are thinner and fluffier than Belgian waffles and are often served with jam, sour cream, or brown cheese, making them a beloved Scandinavian breakfast and dessert treat.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp ground cardamom
- ¼ tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 2 large eggs
- 1¾ cups milk
- ½ cup sour cream or yogurt
- 4 tbsp melted butter, plus more for greasing
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground cardamom, and salt until thoroughly combined.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, sour cream, and melted butter until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
- Combine Wet and Dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix to maintain waffle softness.
- Rest Batter: Let the batter sit for 10 minutes to improve texture and allow ingredients to meld.
- Preheat Waffle Iron: Preheat a heart-shaped waffle iron and lightly grease it with butter to prevent sticking.
- Cook Waffles: Pour batter into the waffle iron and cook until golden brown and tender, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per waffle.
- Serve: Carefully remove waffles and serve warm, topped with your choice of jam, sour cream, or brown cheese.
- Repeat: Continue cooking the remaining batter, greasing the waffle iron as needed for each waffle.
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter; Norwegian waffles should be soft and tender, not crisp.
- Cardamom is traditional but can be adjusted to taste or omitted if desired.
- The batter can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated overnight for convenience.
- For optimal taste and texture, serve waffles fresh and warm.
