Description
Crispy fried potato strips tossed in a flavorful Korean-style chili sauce that balances spicy, sweet, and savory notes. This snack or side dish is perfect for those craving a crunchy and addictive treat inspired by Korean cuisine.
Ingredients
Potatoes
- 3 medium potatoes, cut into thin strips
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil recommended)
For the Sauce
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp honey or sugar
- 1 tsp garlic, minced
- 1 tsp chili flakes
- 1 tbsp water
Instructions
- Soak Potatoes: Soak the thinly cut potato strips in cold water for 15 minutes to remove excess starch, which helps achieve extra crispiness when fried. Then drain well and pat dry thoroughly with a kitchen towel to remove moisture.
- Coat with Cornstarch: Toss the dried potato strips with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until they are evenly coated. This coating helps create a crispy exterior during frying.
- Fry Potatoes: Heat enough oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the coated potato strips in batches until they turn golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes per batch. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Prepare Sauce: In a separate pan, combine ketchup, gochujang, soy sauce, honey or sugar, minced garlic, chili flakes, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently until the sauce thickens slightly and becomes glossy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Toss Potatoes in Sauce: Add the fried crispy potatoes to the pan with the sauce. Toss quickly and evenly to coat all the potatoes in the spicy and sweet chili sauce.
- Serve Immediately: Serve the Korean crispy chili potatoes hot for the best texture and flavor experience.
Notes
- Double frying the potatoes can make them even crispier—fry once until soft and let cool, then fry again until golden and crisp.
- Adjust the amount of chili flakes or gochujang to control the spiciness according to your preference.
- Use fresh potatoes and dry them completely before frying to avoid oil splatters.
- This dish is best enjoyed fresh to retain its crisp texture.
