Description
Juicy, tender bison meatballs made with lean ground bison, fresh herbs, garlic, and simple seasonings. These meatballs are high in protein, low in fat, and perfect for a healthy, flavorful weeknight dinner baked to perfection in the oven.
Ingredients
Meatball Mixture
- 500 g ground bison
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp paprika
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
For Baking
- 1 tbsp olive oil, for brushing
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) to ensure it is hot and ready for baking the meatballs evenly.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground bison, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, fresh parsley, dried oregano, paprika, salt, black pepper, and Parmesan cheese (if using). Gently mix the ingredients until just combined to keep the meatballs tender.
- Form Meatballs: Shape the mixture into approximately 16 to 20 evenly sized meatballs to ensure consistent cooking.
- Prepare for Baking: Arrange the meatballs on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly brush the tops of each meatball with olive oil to aid browning and prevent drying.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the meatballs for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and reach an internal temperature of 71°C (160°F).
- Rest and Serve: Remove the meatballs from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes. This helps retain their juices and tenderness before serving.
Notes
- Bison is very lean, so avoid overcooking the meatballs to keep them juicy and tender.
- Serve the meatballs with tomato sauce, roasted vegetables, a fresh salad, rice, or whole-grain pasta for a complete meal.
- For meal prep, store any cooked meatballs in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days to enjoy later.
- Using fresh herbs like parsley enhances the flavor but can be substituted with dried if unavailable.
- Parmesan cheese is optional but adds a nice depth of flavor and moisture.
