This classic American recipe combines the natural sweetness of honey with the rustic texture of cornmeal, making it a comforting and versatile dish that pairs wonderfully with soups, chili, and other hearty meals.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1/4 cup honey
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and grease a baking dish to ensure the cornbread doesn’t stick.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to evenly distribute all the dry components.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and honey until the mixture is smooth and homogeneous.
- Combine Wet and Dry: Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix to keep the cornbread tender.
- Pour Batter: Transfer the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly with a spatula.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the cornbread cool slightly before slicing for serving. Optionally, drizzle extra honey on top to enhance the sweetness.
