Description

Creamy and flavorful homemade refried beans made with simple, wholesome ingredients. This recipe offers a healthier and more delicious alternative to canned refried beans, perfect as a side dish for Mexican meals or as a protein-rich addition to your plate.

Ingredients

Beans and Liquids

  • 2 cups cooked pinto beans
  • 1/2 cup bean cooking liquid or water

Flavorings and Seasonings

  • 2 tablespoons oil or butter
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil: Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat until shimmering to start building flavor.
  2. Sauté Onion: Add the chopped onion and cook until it becomes soft and translucent, about 5 minutes, to bring out its sweetness.
  3. Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  4. Add Beans and Liquid: Add the cooked pinto beans along with the bean cooking liquid or water to the skillet to facilitate mashing and cooking.
  5. Mash Beans: Using a potato masher or the back of a spoon, mash the beans to your preferred consistency, whether smooth or a bit chunky.
  6. Season: Stir in cumin, salt, and black pepper to taste, enhancing the overall flavor.
  7. Simmer: Cook the mixture for 5 to 10 minutes over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and allow flavors to meld.
  8. Serve Warm: Remove from heat and serve the refried beans warm as a delicious side or dip.

Notes

  • Adjust the thickness by adding more cooking liquid or water if the beans are too thick.
  • Try substituting black beans for a different flavor profile.
  • Optionally, add cheese or chili peppers for extra richness and heat.
