Description
Gyro Kebabs are a flavorful Greek-inspired dish featuring juicy ground lamb and beef skewers seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices. Grilled to perfection and served with warm pita bread, fresh vegetables, and creamy tzatziki sauce, these kebabs make an ideal main course for outdoor cooking or casual meals.
Ingredients
For the Kebabs
- 1 lb ground lamb
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, grated
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
For Serving
- 4 pita breads
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- ½ cup sliced cucumber
- ½ cup sliced red onion
- 1 cup tzatziki sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb, ground beef, minced garlic, grated onion, dried oregano, ground cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, and chopped fresh parsley. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Shape the Kebabs: Divide the seasoned meat mixture into equal portions. Shape each portion around metal or wooden skewers that have been soaked to prevent burning, pressing firmly to ensure the meat adheres to the skewer.
- Preheat the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high heat, ensuring it’s hot enough to sear the meat and cook it evenly.
- Grill the Kebabs: Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, turning occasionally to brown all sides evenly. The internal temperature of the meat should reach 160°F (71°C) to be fully cooked and safe to eat.
- Warm the Pita Bread: While the kebabs are grilling, warm the pita breads either on the grill or in a warm oven until soft and pliable.
- Assemble and Serve: Remove the kebabs from the grill and place them inside the warmed pita breads. Add shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced cucumber, sliced red onions, and a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce. Serve immediately for a delicious Mediterranean meal.
Notes
- Chill the meat mixture in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before shaping to help firm up the kebabs and make them easier to handle.
- Use metal skewers or thoroughly soaked wooden skewers to prevent burning during grilling.
- For added sides, serve the gyro kebabs with a fresh Greek salad or roasted potatoes.
