Ingredients
Sausages
- 4 bratwurst sausages
Vegetables and Seasoning
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Serving
- 4 brat buns or hoagie rolls
- Dijon mustard, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the grill: Begin by preheating your grill to medium heat to ensure it’s ready for cooking the bratwursts evenly.
- Grill the bratwursts: Place the bratwursts on the grill and cook for 15 to 18 minutes, turning them occasionally to brown all sides evenly and to make sure they are cooked through to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
- Sauté the vegetables: While the bratwursts cook, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced red and green bell peppers along with the sliced yellow onion and cook them for 8 to 10 minutes until they soften and begin to caramelize.
- Add seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper into the skillet with the peppers and onions. Cook for an additional 1 minute until the garlic is fragrant.
- Toast the buns: Optional but recommended, toast the brat buns or hoagie rolls lightly on the grill or in a toaster to add texture and warmth.
- Assemble and serve: Place each grilled bratwurst into a toasted bun and top generously with the sautéed peppers and onions. Serve with Dijon mustard on the side if desired for an extra layer of flavor.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can add beer to the skillet while cooking the onions and peppers.
- Serve your brats with classic sides like potato salad or grilled corn for a complete meal.
- Leftover sautéed peppers and onions make a great topping for other sandwiches or burgers the next day.
