Description

A traditional French Pan Bagnat sandwich featuring a crusty baguette filled with flavorful tuna, hard-boiled eggs, fresh vegetables, olives, and a tangy olive oil and red wine vinegar dressing. This hearty Provençal sandwich offers a perfect balance of textures and Mediterranean flavors, making it a satisfying and easy meal option.

Ingredients

Bread

  • 1 large crusty baguette or round loaf

Filling

  • 1 can tuna, drained (about 5-6 ounces)
  • 2 eggs, hard-boiled and sliced
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1/4 cup olives, sliced
  • 1/4 cup green beans, cooked and cooled

Seasoning & Dressing

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread horizontally: Carefully slice the baguette or round loaf in half lengthwise, creating a top and bottom piece for your sandwich.
  2. Add olive oil and vinegar: Drizzle the olive oil and red wine vinegar evenly over the inside surfaces of both bread halves, adding moisture and tang.
  3. Layer the fillings: Begin layering the drained tuna evenly on the bottom half, followed by slices of hard-boiled eggs, tomato, olives, and cooked green beans, distributing ingredients evenly to cover the bread.
  4. Season the sandwich: Sprinkle salt and freshly ground black pepper over the vegetable and tuna layers to enhance the flavors.
  5. Close and press: Carefully replace the top half of the bread and gently press down to compact the sandwich slightly.
  6. Rest before serving: Let the sandwich sit for 10–15 minutes at room temperature to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to absorb the dressing, improving taste and texture.

Notes

  • For a more authentic Pan Bagnat texture, wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.
  • Anchovies can be added along with the tuna for an extra depth of umami flavor.
  • Use fresh quality crusty bread to ensure the sandwich holds well and has a satisfying crunch.
