Description
Tender slices of beef piled into a toasted hoagie roll with melty cheese and served with warm, savory au jus for dipping. This classic French Dip Sandwich is comforting, flavorful, and surprisingly easy to make at home — perfect for a cozy dinner!
Ingredients
Sandwiches:
- 1 lb thin-sliced roast beef (deli-style or leftover pot roast)
- 4 hoagie or French rolls
- 8 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
Au Jus:
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare Au Jus: In a small pot, combine beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5–7 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Warm Beef: Add the thin-sliced roast beef into the au jus, gently warming it without boiling to keep the beef tender and juicy.
- Toast Rolls: Slice the hoagie or French rolls in half and lightly butter the insides. Place under the broiler for 1–2 minutes until toasted and golden.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Layer the warm beef onto the toasted rolls, then top each with slices of provolone or Swiss cheese.
- Broil to Melt Cheese: Return the assembled sandwiches to the broiler briefly until the cheese melts and the edges become golden and bubbly.
- Serve: Serve each sandwich hot with a small bowl of warm au jus on the side for dipping, enhancing the rich flavors.
Notes
- Add caramelized onions for extra richness and sweetness.
- Use leftover slow cooker beef for added depth of flavor and tenderness.
- For spicy heat, add a touch of horseradish or giardiniera to the sandwich.
- Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free rolls and verifying the broth ingredients are gluten-free.
