Description

Easy Sushi Balls, also known as onigiri-style sushi bites, are a fun and simple way to enjoy sushi flavors at home without any rolling required. Filled with seasoned sushi rice and fresh fillings like cooked salmon and avocado, these handheld bites make perfect lunch box snacks, appetizers, or light meals that are quick and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Sushi Rice

  • 2 cups cooked sushi rice, cooled slightly
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Filling

  • 4 oz cooked salmon, canned tuna, or imitation crab, flaked
  • 1 small avocado, diced
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)

Toppings and Serving

  • 2 sheets nori, cut into small strips
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • Soy sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved, creating a balanced sushi rice seasoning.
  2. Season Rice: Gently fold the seasoning into the warm, slightly cooled sushi rice, making sure it is evenly coated, then allow the rice to cool further for easier handling.
  3. Mix Filling: In a separate bowl, combine the flaked cooked salmon (or canned tuna or imitation crab), diced avocado, and mayonnaise if using, mixing gently to combine without mashing the avocado.
  4. Wet Hands: Lightly wet your hands with water to prevent the sticky rice from adhering to your palms during assembly.
  5. Scoop Rice: Scoop approximately 2 tablespoons of the seasoned sushi rice into your palm, flattening it slightly to form the base for the sushi ball.
  6. Add Filling: Place a small spoonful of the filling mixture in the center of the rice base.
  7. Form Sushi Ball: Cover the filling with another spoonful of sushi rice, then gently mold and shape into a compact ball without pressing too hard to keep it light and airy.
  8. Repeat: Continue the process with the remaining rice and filling until you have about 8 sushi balls.
  9. Wrap and Garnish: Wrap each sushi ball with a strip of nori seaweed and sprinkle sesame seeds on top for added flavor and texture.
  10. Serve: Arrange sushi balls on a plate and serve with soy sauce for dipping, optionally adding spicy mayo or wasabi for extra flair.

Notes

  • Keep your hands damp when shaping the rice balls to prevent sticking.
  • Substitute the filling with cooked shrimp, smoked salmon, or vegetables for different taste variations.
  • Best enjoyed on the same day they are made for optimal freshness.
  • For extra flavor, serve alongside spicy mayo or wasabi.
