Classic Smoky Beef Burgers are juicy grilled patties infused with smoky spices and garlic, perfectly paired with melted cheddar cheese and fresh toppings. This recipe delivers the ultimate backyard cookout meal that’s full of flavor and easy to prepare.
Ingredients
Beef Patties
- 1½ lbs (680 g) ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Burger Assembly
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
- Lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high, ensuring it is properly cleaned and oiled to prevent the patties from sticking.
- Mix the Meat: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until all spices are evenly distributed without overworking the meat.
- Shape Patties: Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty about ¾-inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center to prevent puffing up while cooking.
- Grill the Burgers: Place the patties on the grill and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness. Avoid pressing down on the patties to keep them juicy.
- Add Cheese: If using, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty during the last minute of grilling to melt.
- Toast Buns: Lightly toast the hamburger buns on the grill for 1–2 minutes until golden and warm.
- Assemble and Serve: Build your burgers by layering the patties with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and any other desired toppings on the toasted buns. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Do not press the patties while grilling to retain their juiciness.
- Customize your burger toppings to suit your taste—add bacon, avocado, or your favorite sauces for extra flavor.
- Serve burgers with classic sides such as fries, coleslaw, or grilled vegetables for a complete meal.
