Description
Tender, buttery apple scones studded with fresh diced apples and spiced with cinnamon, baked to golden perfection and finished with a sweet maple glaze. These scones make a delightful treat for cozy breakfasts or brunch gatherings.
Ingredients
Scones:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 cup diced firm apple (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
- ⅔ cup heavy cream
- 1 large egg
Maple Glaze:
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
- 1 tsp milk
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the scones from sticking and to ensure even baking.
- Combine Dry Ingredients and Cut in Butter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Apples and Wet Ingredients: Stir the diced apples into the crumbly mixture. In a small bowl, whisk together the heavy cream and egg, then pour this into the flour mixture. Gently mix until just combined to avoid overworking the dough.
- Shape and Cut Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a circle about 1 inch thick. Cut the circle into 8 equal wedges and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
- Bake the Scones: Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Prepare the Maple Glaze: While the scones cool, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk in a small bowl until smooth.
- Glaze the Scones: Drizzle the maple glaze generously over the cooled scones, allowing it to set slightly before serving.
Notes
- Use firm apple varieties like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith to ensure the apple pieces hold their shape and add a nice tartness.
- Make sure the butter is very cold for a flaky texture in the scones.
- Do not overmix the dough to keep the scones tender and light.
- The glaze can be adjusted in thickness by adding more powdered sugar for a thicker glaze or more milk for a thinner drizzle.
