Description

Sweet-and-Spicy Sausage Bites are the ultimate party appetizer—smoky sausage coated in a rich, tangy, and slightly boozy barbecue-style sauce. Quick to prepare and bursting with bold flavors, they’re a hit at any gathering.

Ingredients

1 Tbsp. canola oil

2 lb. spicy hickory-smoked sausage, sliced diagonally into 1 1/2-inch-thick pieces

1/2 cup pure cane syrup

1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar

1/4 cup ketchup

1/4 cup bourbon

2 Tbsp. spicy brown mustard

1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar

1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Brown half the sausage for 4–5 minutes, transfer to paper towel-lined plate, and repeat with the remaining sausage.
  2. Pour drippings into a small heatproof bowl and discard once cooled. Do not wipe the skillet clean.
  3. Whisk together cane syrup, brown sugar, ketchup, bourbon, mustard, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce in a medium bowl. Pour into the skillet and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until sauce thickens slightly, 2–3 minutes.
  5. Return sausage to skillet, stir to coat, and cook over medium-low heat for 1 minute until heated through. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use mild sausage and less mustard for a kid-friendly version.
  • For a vegetarian option, substitute plant-based sausage.
  • Add hot sauce or red pepper flakes for more heat.
  • Increase brown sugar or add honey for a sweeter profile.
