Description

A tender, lightly spiced almond streusel dessert cake that combines warm cinnamon and nutmeg flavors with a buttery almond topping. Perfect for holiday celebrations or an elegant afternoon tea treat.

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Streusel Topping

  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s at the right temperature for baking the cake evenly.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, which helps create a tender crumb.
  3. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract thoroughly for flavor.
  4. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg, ensuring they are well distributed for even spice and leavening.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix gently to avoid overworking the batter.
  6. Pour Batter: Pour the prepared batter into a greased or lined baking pan, spreading it evenly.
  7. Prepare Streusel: In a bowl, mix together chopped almonds, flour, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon until crumbly to form the streusel topping.
  8. Apply Topping: Sprinkle the streusel mixture evenly over the top of the batter in the pan.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.

Notes

  • Add orange zest to the batter or streusel for a bright, festive citrus flavor.
  • Dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar before serving for a pretty, sweet finishing touch.
