Classic Salisbury steak made in the slow cooker with tender beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom gravy. This recipe is hearty, comforting, and easy to prepare, perfect for a satisfying dinner.
Ingredients
For Patties:
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For Gravy:
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cups sliced mushrooms
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon thyme (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, then shape the mixture into 6 equal patties. For best flavor, lightly brown the patties in a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side; this step is optional but recommended.
- Arrange Ingredients in Slow Cooker: Place the sliced onions and mushrooms evenly in the bottom of the slow cooker. Arrange the browned (or raw if skipping browning) patties on top of the vegetables.
- Prepare Gravy: In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the patties and vegetables in the slow cooker.
- Cook: Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until the patties are cooked through and tender and the gravy has thickened slightly.
- Serve: Once done, serve the Salisbury steak hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles to soak up the mushroom gravy.

- Browning the patties before slow cooking enhances the flavor and texture.
- For a thicker gravy, stir in a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water) during the last 15 minutes of cooking.
