Description

Classic Salisbury steak made in the slow cooker with tender beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom gravy. This recipe is hearty, comforting, and easy to prepare, perfect for a satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

For Patties:

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Gravy:

  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, then shape the mixture into 6 equal patties. For best flavor, lightly brown the patties in a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side; this step is optional but recommended.
  2. Arrange Ingredients in Slow Cooker: Place the sliced onions and mushrooms evenly in the bottom of the slow cooker. Arrange the browned (or raw if skipping browning) patties on top of the vegetables.
  3. Prepare Gravy: In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the patties and vegetables in the slow cooker.
  4. Cook: Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until the patties are cooked through and tender and the gravy has thickened slightly.
  5. Serve: Once done, serve the Salisbury steak hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles to soak up the mushroom gravy.

Notes

  • Browning the patties before slow cooking enhances the flavor and texture.
  • For a thicker gravy, stir in a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water) during the last 15 minutes of cooking.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Adjust seasoning according to taste before serving.
