Description

Salmon Chowder is a rich and creamy soup filled with tender salmon, potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions in a velvety broth. Perfect for a cozy meal, this comforting chowder is a delicious twist on the classic clam chowder.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh or canned salmon, drained and flaked
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 4 cups fish or vegetable broth
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup corn kernels for added sweetness and texture

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  2. Add the diced potatoes, carrots, and celery, and cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour in the fish broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes and carrots are tender.
  4. Stir in the heavy cream, thyme, smoked paprika, and season with salt and pepper. Bring the mixture back to a simmer and cook for another 5 minutes.
  5. Add the flaked salmon (and corn, if using) to the pot. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the salmon to heat through and the flavors to meld together.
  6. Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or smoked paprika if needed.
  7. Serve the chowder hot, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • For extra richness, you can add a tablespoon of butter when adding the cream.
  • This chowder can be made with canned salmon for convenience, or fresh salmon fillets can be poached separately and flaked into the soup.
  • For a lighter version, use milk or a dairy-free alternative like coconut milk in place of heavy cream.
