Description

This classic Prosciutto and Melon appetizer combines the salty, savory flavor of thinly sliced prosciutto with the sweet, juicy freshness of ripe melon. A simple yet elegant dish, it’s perfect for warm weather entertaining, Italian-inspired gatherings, or as a light starter. The combination offers a delightful balance of flavors and textures that is refreshing and sophisticated.

Ingredients

Melon

  • 1 ripe cantaloupe or honeydew melon, seeded and cut into wedges or bite-sized cubes

Prosciutto

  • 810 slices prosciutto, very thinly sliced

Garnishes (Optional)

  • Fresh basil or mint leaves
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • Balsamic glaze or reduction, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare melon: Slice the cantaloupe or honeydew melon into bite-sized cubes or thin wedges, ensuring the pieces are manageable for a single bite.
  2. Wrap: Gently wrap each piece of melon with a slice or half slice of prosciutto, taking care not to tear the delicate meat.
  3. Assemble: Arrange the wrapped melon pieces attractively on a serving platter, spacing them for easy picking.
  4. Finish: Garnish the platter with fresh basil or mint leaves, sprinkle freshly cracked black pepper over the top, and lightly drizzle with balsamic glaze if desired.
  5. Serve: Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor, or chill in the refrigerator for up to one hour before serving. Avoid refrigerating overnight as prosciutto texture can deteriorate.

Notes

  • Melon choice can be cantaloupe or honeydew depending on preference.
  • Use toothpicks to skewer each wrapped melon cube for easy party serving.
  • For added variety, include small mozzarella balls or fresh figs alongside the melon and prosciutto.
  • Best served cold and fresh; do not refrigerate overnight to maintain texture.
