Description
Hearty ground beef patties, seasoned and pan-seared, smothered in a savory brown gravy. A comforting and flavorful meal perfect for any dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, finely chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix everything until well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the same skillet, sprinkle the flour and stir it around to make a roux. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until it becomes golden brown.
- Slowly add the beef broth to the skillet, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the soy sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir to combine and bring the gravy to a simmer.
- Once the gravy has thickened, return the hamburger patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them. Let them simmer in the gravy for another 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Serve the hamburger steaks with the gravy on top.
Notes
- Mushrooms can be added to the gravy for extra flavor.
- To make it spicier, add hot sauce or red pepper flakes to the gravy.
- For a vegetarian option, use plant-based ground beef or lentils and mushrooms.
- Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
- Ground turkey can be used instead of ground beef for a lighter version.
