Description

Hamburger Green Bean Casserole is a hearty, one-pan dish with savory ground beef, tender green beans, creamy sauce, and a crispy topping. It’s an easy and comforting meal perfect for weeknights or any time you need a satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

  • For the Casserole
    1 pound ground beef
1 can (15 ounces) green beans, drained (or 2 cups fresh or frozen green beans)
    1/2 onion, chopped
1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
    1/4 cup milk
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup French fried onions (for topping)
    Salt, to taste
Optional: 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary (for extra flavor)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the beef and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until softened.
  • Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt (and thyme or rosemary if using).
  • Mix well and simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce is heated through.
  • Stir in the green beans and 1/2 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese until everything is evenly combined.
  • Transfer the beef and green bean mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese over the top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the cheese is melted.
  • Remove the casserole from the oven and top with French fried onions.
  • Return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the onions are golden and crispy.
  • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a heartier meal, add diced, cooked potatoes to the casserole.
  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • For a vegetarian option, omit the meat and add extra vegetables like mushrooms, zucchini, or carrots. You can also replace the cream of mushroom soup with a vegetable-based soup.
  • For a spicy twist, add a few dashes of hot sauce or crushed red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
