Description
Warm, spiced gingerbread waffles made with molasses, buttermilk, and classic gingerbread spices. These waffles offer a cozy, flavorful breakfast perfect for winter mornings and holiday celebrations.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ginger
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp cloves
- 1/2 tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 2 tbsp molasses
Instructions
- Preheat the waffle iron. Turn on the waffle iron and let it heat up to ensure waffles cook evenly and become crisp on the outside.
- Mix dry ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. This creates the spiced base for the waffles.
- Combine wet ingredients. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then whisk in the buttermilk, melted butter, and molasses until fully combined and smooth.
- Mix wet and dry. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix to keep the waffles tender.
- Cook the waffles. Pour batter onto the preheated waffle iron and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp. Cooking time will vary by waffle iron but usually takes about 3-5 minutes per waffle.
Notes
- Serve the waffles warm with whipped cream or vanilla yogurt for a creamy contrast.
- For added brightness, mix in some fresh orange zest into the batter before cooking.
