Description
Tender Swedish meatballs made from a blend of ground beef and pork, simmered in a rich and creamy gravy, perfect for a comforting dinner served with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
Ingredients
Meatballs
- ½ lb ground beef
- ½ lb ground pork
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ½ cup milk
- Salt, pepper, nutmeg to taste
Gravy
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- ½ cup cream
Instructions
- Prepare the meatball mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, egg, and milk. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Mix gently until just combined to keep the meatballs tender.
- Form the meatballs: Shape the mixture into small, evenly sized meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
- Brown the meatballs: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil or butter. Pan-fry the meatballs until they are golden brown on all sides, ensuring they cook through. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the gravy base: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to make a roux, cooking for about 1-2 minutes until it turns golden and fragrant.
- Add liquids for gravy: Gradually whisk in the beef broth and cream, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer.
- Simmer meatballs in gravy: Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, coating them with the creamy gravy. Simmer everything together for 10 minutes, allowing flavors to meld and the meatballs to fully cook.
