Description

Juicy seasoned hamburger steaks smothered in a rich, creamy mushroom gravy — a comforting Southern-style dinner that comes together quickly in one skillet! Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ small onion, finely diced
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz sliced mushrooms
  • ½ small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream or half & half
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix ground beef, diced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  2. Form Steaks: Shape the mixture into 4 evenly sized hamburger steaks, ensuring they hold together well.
  3. Brown Steaks: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and brown the steaks for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until a crust forms. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Cook Vegetables: In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced mushrooms and onions, cooking for about 5 minutes until softened.
  5. Sauté Garlic: Add minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for 1 minute to release its aroma.
  6. Make Roux: Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir continuously for 1 to 2 minutes to cook the flour and form a roux.
  7. Add Liquids: Gradually whisk in the beef broth and cream, stirring until the mixture is smooth and thickened into a creamy gravy.
  8. Simmer Steaks: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, cover, and simmer gently for 10 minutes or until the steaks are cooked through.
  9. Season & Serve: Taste the gravy and season with salt and pepper as needed before serving.

Notes

  • Swap heavy cream for sour cream for a tangy twist.
  • Make it lighter by using 90% lean beef or ground turkey.
  • Add rosemary or thyme for a deeper flavor.
  • For gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and gluten-free flour.
