Description

This copycat version of Zupas’ Ultimate Grilled Cheese delivers layers of gooey melted cheese, toasted artisan sourdough bread, and a touch of sweet and savory perfection. Enhanced by optional spreads like honey or pesto, it’s an indulgent sandwich ideal for a cozy lunch or easy dinner, especially delicious when paired with tomato soup for dipping.

Ingredients

Bread and Spreads

  • 4 slices artisan sourdough or bakery bread
  • 23 tbsp softened butter (or mayonnaise)
  • Optional: 2 tbsp honey or 1–2 tbsp pesto for spreading

Cheeses

  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 slices muenster or mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread butter or mayonnaise evenly on one side of each bread slice to ensure a crispy, golden exterior when cooked.
  2. Add Optional Spread: If desired, spread a thin layer of honey or pesto on the unbuttered side of the bread for added flavor complexity.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich: Layer the cheddar and muenster (or mozzarella) cheeses between two bread slices, ensuring the buttered sides face outward for optimal toasting.
  4. Heat the Skillet: Preheat a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat to prepare for cooking the sandwiches.
  5. Cook the Sandwiches: Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.
  6. Slice and Serve: Remove from heat, slice the sandwiches in half, and serve warm. They pair excellently with tomato soup for dipping to enhance the comfort food experience.

Notes

  • For an extra cheesy pull, add a slice of provolone or American cheese inside the sandwich.
  • To achieve a cheesy crisp exterior, sprinkle shredded cheese directly onto the skillet before flipping the sandwich.
  • Customize your grilled cheese with add-ins such as crispy bacon, fresh tomato slices, caramelized onions, or a swipe of garlic butter for added flavor.
