Ingredients

  • For the Burger Patties:

    • 1 lb ground beef (preferably lean)

    • 1/2 cup cooked bulgur wheat (cooled)

    • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion

    • 1 clove garlic, minced

    • 1 egg

    • 1/4 tsp salt

    • 1/4 tsp black pepper

    • 1 tsp dried oregano (optional)

    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

  • For the Toppings:

    • 4 slices cheddar cheese (or cheese of choice)

    • 4 burger buns (whole grain or your preference)

    • Lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles (optional)

  • Ketchup, mustard, or mayo (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bulgur Wheat:

    • Cook the bulgur wheat according to package instructions. Typically, you’ll combine 1/2 cup bulgur with 1/2 cup boiling water, cover, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside to cool.

  • Make the Patties:

    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooled bulgur wheat, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until well combined, but avoid overworking the mixture.

    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form them into patties.

  • Cook the Patties:

    • Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat and lightly oil it.

    • Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. About 1 minute before they’re done, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.

  • Toast the Buns:

    • While the patties are cooking, toast the burger buns lightly on the grill or in a separate pan for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

  • Assemble the Burger:

    • Place the cooked patties on the bottom half of the toasted buns.

    • Add any additional toppings you like, such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mustard, or mayo.

    • Top with the other half of the bun.

  • Serve and Enjoy:

  • Serve the Beef and Bulgur Wheat Cheeseburgers with a side of fries, salad, or your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • You can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.

  • Bulgur wheat adds a lovely texture and nutty flavor to the burger, but if you prefer a smoother patty, you can try substituting it with breadcrumbs.

  • These patties can be prepped ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours before cooking.
