Description

Beef and Broccoli is a classic Chinese-American stir-fry dish featuring tender slices of beef and crisp broccoli florets in a savory garlic and soy-based sauce. It’s quick, flavorful, and perfect for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated (optional)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooked rice, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, brown sugar, beef broth, and sesame oil. Set aside.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the sliced beef and cook until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  4. Add remaining oil to the skillet. Sauté garlic and ginger (if using) for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add broccoli florets and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes. Add a splash of water, cover, and steam for another 2-3 minutes until broccoli is tender-crisp.
  6. Return the beef to the skillet.
  7. Pour in the sauce and toss everything together. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and broccoli.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve hot over cooked rice if desired.

Notes

  • Slicing the beef thinly against the grain helps it stay tender.
  • Swap broccoli for other vegetables like bell peppers or snow peas if desired.
  • For extra spice, add red pepper flakes or a dash of sriracha to the sauce.
  • This dish can be made gluten-free by using tamari instead of soy sauce.
