Description

A classic Australian party favorite featuring crispy golden puff pastry filled with a savory seasoned sausage mixture, perfect as an appetizer or snack for gatherings.

Ingredients

Sausage Filling

  • 1 lb ground pork or sausage meat
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Pastry

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s hot enough for a crispy, golden finish on the sausage rolls.
  2. Prepare Sausage Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground pork or sausage meat with finely diced onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, dried parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Cut Puff Pastry: Lay out the thawed puff pastry sheets and cut each sheet into long strips, approximately 2 inches wide, to create the base for rolling the sausage mixture.
  4. Assemble Rolls: Spoon the sausage mixture down the center of each pastry strip in a log shape. Carefully roll the pastry around the filling, sealing the edges by pressing gently to enclose the filling completely.
  5. Slice and Glaze: Cut the rolled sausage logs into small bite-sized pieces, roughly 2 to 3 inches long. Arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops generously with the beaten egg to achieve a shiny, golden crust during baking.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown, and the sausage filling is cooked through.

Notes

  • For added moisture and sweetness, grate some carrot and mix it into the sausage filling.
  • Serve the sausage rolls with ketchup, sweet chili sauce, or your favorite dipping sauce for extra flavor.
